We help adults with an intellectual disability who have problems with speech, language, communication or swallowing (dysphagia).

We also support their carers, support staff and other professionals.

Our service includes:

  • Assessment and diagnosis of speech, language and communication needs
  • Help with understanding information and making decisions
  • Therapy and support to improve communication skills
  • Support for safe eating and drinking
  • Advice and training for carers and staff
  • Communication aids for adults with developmental disabilities 

We work as part of: 

  • Community Intellectual Disability Teams
  • Intensive Community Assessment and Treatment Teams
  • Some hospital (inpatient) services

We provide services across Nottinghamshire County and Nottingham City.

We aim to help people communicate better, stay safe when eating and drinking, live well and enjoy life.  

Accessing our services

The IDD Speech and Language Therapy service is for: 

  • People aged 18 years or older.
  • Who has an intellectual disability. This is sometimes also called a learning disability.
  • Lives in Nottinghamshire or has a Nottinghamshire GP.
  • Has speech, language, and communication need and / or has problems with eating and drinking.

Service opening hours

Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
